Meet the Midwives

Primary Licensed Midwife and Owner

Kaleen Foster LM, CPM

My passion for birth and women came years before my formal introduction in the birth community. After a traumatic cesarean with my first son in 2007, I was determined to have a different experience with my next child.

I read everything birth-related I could get my hands on. I devoured books like Spiritual Midwifery, and Gentle Birth, and I ended up having an unmedicated birth at a birth center in Santa Cruz with an Obstetrician.

I had my unmediated birth, and while it was empowering, several aspects were not ideal, and I still felt like I lacked true agency about the choices surrounding my care…

A few years later, when I became pregnant with my 3rd son, I was determined to have a homebirth. I sought out a midwife and had the most amazing, peaceful, beautiful birth at home, surrounded by the people I love, with complete autonomy. I stayed more relaxed, which I think impacted the amount of pain I experienced this time.

Midwifery is truly family-centered care, and I felt empowered as I stepped into motherhood for the third time.

My homebirth solidified what I knew in my heart: that being a midwife would be my dream job. It ignited something in me, and I truly desire for other women to be given the opportunity to experience pregnancy and birth in such a way that they, too, could feel empowered, while also allowing their children to be welcomed in a safe and loving environment.

It is well known that when people transition from this life, they don’t want to experience a medical death. They would rather be at home, surrounded by their loved ones. I think this is what babies want too as they transition into this earthly realm.

Soon after the birth of my third son, I did my training to become a Doula, and my first doula birth happened to be twins born at home with a midwife. It was nothing short of magical.

After this experience, I was certain that I wanted to pursue a career as a midwife. Not long after, I enrolled in school through the National College of Midwifery, and almost five years later, Certified Professional Midwife, and shortly after, in January of 2020, I got licensed by the California Medical Board to practice midwifery.

Midwifery is a calling and a passion, and I feel so grateful I get to do this work. I am honored to be welcomed into birth spaces, where I get to witness women transcend into motherhood with grace and agency, and babies be welcomed with love and reverence.

I believe fervently that the experiences surrounding pregnancy and birth are extremely important to both the mother and child, and can have lifelong implications, positively or negatively, to the dyad.

It is my mission to provide holistic care that supports physiology, while also being prepared with life-saving skills and supplies, so that if, in the rare event, complications arise, they can be handled calmly and swiftly.

It is my goal to provide my clients with the highest level of evidence-informed care. I want mothers to begin motherhood not feeling defeated and powerless, but empowered and powerful, because they are!
